Sevilla are reportedly expecting Barcelona to make a last-ditch move for Jules Kounde, although Chelsea are still in pole position when it comes to landing the Frenchman.
Chelsea have restarted negotiations with Sevilla for Kounde after losing out on Matthijs de Ligt and discovering Nathan Ake will not be available for transfer. De Ligt has gone to Bayern Munich, while Manchester City want to keep Ake for next season.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are in desperate need of defensive additions and this has seen them go back in for Kounde, 23.
Chelsea are thought to be confident about landing him. They have the necessary funds to meet Sevilla’s demands, while Kounde is also open to a move to west London.
According to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs, the centre-back did not train with Sevilla on Wednesday. The Spanish club are willing to let him go and want to get an exit over the line so they can focus on bringing in a replacement.
Sevilla chief Monchi has also told Barcelona where they stand. Xavi’s side have been informed they need to match Chelsea’s £51.1million offer or walk away from negotiations.
Spanish outlet Sport reveal Barca have heard Monchi’s request and are still in the mix, even if they are behind Chelsea.
Sevilla anticipate the Blaugrana will make one last play for Kounde, which the report predicts will be transfer ‘madness’.
Barcelona only a minor threat to Chelsea for Jules Kounde
However, Barca do not plan to match the £51.1m bid that already exists. Instead, they will send Sevilla an offer worth significantly less which includes the rest in add-ons.
Of course, Sevilla’s stance means this will probably be rejected. Barca think Kounde wants to join them over Chelsea and are essentially hoping this desire will see him move to the Nou Camp.
This is what happened with Raphinha. Chelsea had an agreement in place with Leeds, but the winger did not want to join the Blues. As such, Barca managed to convince Leeds on a deal without putting down as much in an initial fee.
However, Barca are set for disappointment as Kounde is happy to sign for either them or Chelsea.
Unlike Raphinha, the France international will still be willing to join Chelsea and is therefore unlikely to kick up a fuss.
Chelsea will soon reach an agreement with Sevilla for Kounde. They can then begin to sort out a contract and organise a medical.
The player probably won’t feature in the clash against Arsenal on Sunday. However, he could play in a Chelsea shirt for the first time when the Blues come up against Udinese next Friday.
Meanwhile, Tuchel has reacted after Chelsea lost on penalties to MLS team Charlotte FC in a pre-season friendly.
