Julius Randle says he wants to retire as a Knick amid All-Star season
The New York Knicks are finishing up their best season in ages, and that has been cause for some rare optimism for the future at Madison Square Garden.
Julius Randle, whose All-Star season has fueled the team's resurgence, briefly addressed his future with the team during an appearance on "Victory: The Podcast" when prodded by "Entourage" creator Doug Ellin.
Asked if he loves playing in New York, Randle said "I love it, I want to retire a Knick, man."
It's hard to think of the last time an All-Star in his prime said that about the team.
The 26-year-old Randle is currently in the second year of a three-year, $63 million contract. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported last week that the team intends to discuss a contract extension with the power forward this offseason, which could go up to four years and $106 million in addition to next season's $19.8 million salary. He could earn much more money, nearly $100 million more, by waiting until he hits unrestricted free agency to sign, however.
Randle is currently averaging 24.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 37.3 minutes per game, all career highs for the former seventh overall pick. Trying to lock up that kind of player in his mid-twenties doesn't seem too hard of a decision for the team, so we'll see how this offseason plays out.
