Jurgen Klopp is hoping that Mohamed Salah will stay at Liverpool as he addressed the forward’s ongoing contract situation. The Egyptian international’s present deal expires at the end of the season.

And he ramped up the pressure on the Anfield hierarchy with some hard-hitting comments back in November. Speaking to a handful of journalists, including the ECHO, after his side’s 3-2 win over Southampton, Salah said he was 'more out than in' at Liverpool.

He also went on to say he was 'disappointed' not to have received a formal approach from the club over a new deal. The ECHO first reported back in September that Salah would like to sign a new contract to extend his Anfield stay.

And now speaking at a press conference for his unveiling as the Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull, Klopp has revealed he is hopeful that Salah will remain a Liverpool player as he is the best forward the club have in modern times.

He said: “I hope he stays. He is the biggest striker Liverpool had in the modern times - obviously there were other good strikers, really good strikers!

"But a fantastic player, fantastic human being, outstanding athlete, best ambassador your country could have. Fantastic, really in pretty much all departments. So I hope he will stay at Liverpool.”

Speaking at the start of this month, Salah insisted he is determined to end on a high at Liverpool and win the Premier League in what he suggests is his final season at the club.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "The first thing that was on the list was to win the Premier League with Liverpool.

"In my interviews over the last seven or eight years, I always say [I want to win the] Champions League. But this is the first time I'm saying I really want to win the Premier League with Liverpool."

Before he added: "I have no idea. It's probably because we didn't celebrate the one we won in the way we wanted, and also, coming back here too, it's my last year in the club, so you want to do something special for the city. That was the thing in my head.

"We waited for that title for 30 years or so. So, to win it, and it was the pandemic at that time, we didn't really have time to celebrate it in the right way. It's not a nice thing to do, so hopefully we can do it this year."
