Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been delighted with two aspects of the play of Darwin Nunez after dismissing the general perception of the striker from outside of Anfield.

The club’s record signing drew a blank in the two pre-season games in Asia. Nunez, an £85m signing, was the butt of jokes on Twitter last week after a clip of him missing from eight yards went viral. The fact that the Uruguayan’s effort, which he sent into orbit, was in the defeat to Manchester United only compounded the matter.

But in truth, drawing conclusions about the 23-year-old from 60 minutes across two friendlies is crazy.

The stats will point to two fruitless games for Nunez, but Klopp and the Liverpool backroom team are more than happy with the former Benfica man.

According to The Athletic, Klopp and Co “loved his movement and his ability to get away from defenders and find pockets of space”. The feeling is also that he has shown early signs of linking up well with both full-backs who are so important to Klopp’s system.

And the Reds boss has dismissed the nuance surrounding Nunez.

“I am not worried at all (about Nunez),” Klopp said. “The general judgement is 0.0 per cent interesting. We all know it’s a joke, or a game for some people to pick out some situations where a player is not doing well.

“The only really important thing, first and foremost, is how I judge the situation for the player. I couldn’t be more calm about it. I am completely convinced about his potential.”

Nunez failed to score against Manchester United and Crystal Palace. But he did force good saves from the keepers in both games. And there is no pressure for Nunez to be up to speed for the first game at Fulham.

Van Dijk a fan of Nunez

Klopp remains stacked with options, despite the exits of Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Miniamino. And both Harvey Elliott and Fulham old boy Fabio Carvalho did themselves no harm whatsoever with eye-catching displays in Asia.

Virgil van Dijk is also most definitely a fan of Nunez, and told The Athletic: “We saw how good Darwin is when we played against Benfica last season (in the Champions League quarter-finals).

“He’s a very talented striker — one for now and also one for the future. I just remember in the away leg. He tried to target Ibou (central defensive partner Ibrahima Konate) a bit more than me!

“And he did well. He caused a lot of problems for us as a team. Very direct, quick and strong. I was sad that Sadio left us (for Bayern Munich), but we knew it was coming. He felt that it was time to move on and get a new challenge. We all respected that.

“The club reacted by getting Darwin in. Hopefully, he’s going to have a fantastic career for Liverpool.”
