Jurgen Klopp explains Mikel Arteta touchline bust-up at Anfield: ‘I am really sick of these situations’
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he is “sick” of pressure being put on officials to punish Sadio Mane as he explained his heated touchline row with Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta.
Klopp and Arteta engaged in a heated altercation in the first half of Liverpool’s 4-0 Premier League win at Anfield on Saturday evening after an innocuous-looking aerial tussle between Mane and Gunners defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.
The irate Arsenal boss seemed to feel that his player had been caught with an elbow - a claim which clearly infuriated Klopp.
The two bosses rowed angrily separated by only the fourth official, with a furious Arteta having to be dragged away by his assistant.
Both managers were shown yellow cards by referee Michael Oliver as they exchanged further angry words.
Asked to explain the clash after his side’s easy win on Merseyside, Klopp told Sky Sports: “It was a completely clean situation, nothing happened, two players jumped in the air and didn’t touch each other, really, at least not like a foul.
“The bench of Arsenal went up and I asked: ‘What do you want from that?’. There was no contact really, but it looked like everybody wanted a red card.
“I am really sick of these situations, where everybody tries to go for Sadio in these moments. He is a physical player, obviously, he does make hard fouls.
“We had to take Sadio off against Atletico [Madrid in the Champions League] because they wanted him to get a yellow card.
“The referee did really well in that situation - I deserved a yellow card. It wasn’t not OK and that is what I said. It just happened in the moment.”
Meanwhile, Arteta played down the bust-up after the game and insisted he had since congratulated Klopp on Liverpool’s victory.
“He was defending his team, I was defending my team, that’s it,” he said. “It doesn’t matter.
“Yes, I did [speak to Klopp after the match] and I congratulated him. These moments are left on the pitch.”
