Jurgen Klopp has explained the benefits of Liverpool signing Arthur Melo from Juventus, as well as revealing Diogo Jota could return to action on Saturday.
Liverpool needed to bring in a new midfielder following injuries to Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Skipper Jordan Henderson recently picked up an injury as well, making their transfer need even greater.
The Reds would love to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund but are waiting for the right time to do so.
This is most likely to be next summer, which is when Liverpool could launch a £100million move for the Englishman.
Klopp needed midfield reinforcements for the current season and Liverpool went with Juventus’ Arthur.
The 26-year-old has moved to Anfield on loan, and Liverpool have the option to buy him at the end of the season.
According to an official press release from Juve, this is worth £32.3m (€37.5m). It would be payable over two years if Liverpool did take up the option.
Arthur says ‘it’s a dream’ to join the club and that he will ‘give his all’ while wearing the Liverpool shirt.
Ahead of Liverpool’s clash against local rivals Everton on Saturday, Klopp was asked about his new signing.
Jurgen Klopp gives latest on Arthur deal
“I’m really happy about his transfer. My information is it won’t happen until tomorrow, international clearance,” the manager said (via Liverpool Echo).
Klopp then explained why he likes the move ‘a lot’. “He is the best age for a footballer. He can give rhythm, he is a really good passer. He is really good in tight areas. I like it a lot,” Klopp added.
Attention then turned to Henderson, who picked up a hamstring problem in the recent victory over Newcastle United.
On the Liverpool captain, Klopp said: “Nothing yet, we are waiting on the result. We haven’t had it yet. He’s definitely out but don’t know the extent.”
However, there is much more positive news when it comes to Portuguese forward Jota. He is available to feature against Everton after returning to full fitness.
Major lift as Jota prepares to return
“Diogo will probably be in (tomorrow). He trained yesterday for the first time and will today,” Klopp revealed.
This is a huge boost for the Reds. Roberto Firmino has been in great form while Jota has been out injured and Darwin Nunez suspended. But having Jota back will give Klopp another option when Liverpool are in desperate need of a goal.
On Nunez’s red card and imminent return, Klopp said: “He has learned the lesson. He is in really good shape. We won the last two games so we don’t see it as a bad thing, the time he was out, as we could help him, he looks really settled now.
“He is really happy to be back. Always I give him a high five but I gave him a slap on the neck so he remembers! His English hasn’t improved that much in 15 days, though.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has provided his opinion on the club capturing Arthur.
