Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their interest in PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare and may move in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old has been turning heads with his displays for the Eredivisie side and a number of clubs have been linked. West Ham United have been mentioned in connection with the defensive midfielder. And Chelsea are thought to have had a bid knocked back in the summer window.

Reports suggest the Blues indicated to the Dutch club that they would pay £39m for the Ivory Coast international. However, PSV refused to play ball and he remained at Philips Stadion.

Manchester United were also thought to be keen after the arrival of Erik ten Hag. And Italian giants AC Milan have also shown an interest in the African.

Rumours suggested Liverpool had looked at the schemer last season and were tipped for a summer swoop. However, Jurgen Klopp looked elsewhere, with Arthur brought in on loan on deadline day.

Calciomercato state that the Reds have not forgotten about Sangare and ‘like’ him as a future option. A possible price tag of around £31m will not put off the Merseysiders.

Fabinho currently occupies the holding role for the Anfield giants. And Sangare could provide cover for the 28-year-old Brazil ace.

The former Toulouse star is said to be open to a move, with the lure of Liverpool hard to resist. But other clubs are still in the race, according to the report.

Liverpool seek lift to get season back on track

It has been a tough and unexpected start to the season for Liverpool. Pipped to the title by Manchester City last term and beaten Champions League finalists, they were slated for another title challenge.

However, just two wins from their opening six games sees the north-west giants six points adrift of table-topping Arsenal. Rivals City are five points better off.

But, although the gap is not insurmountable, the manner in which Klopp’s charges are playing is worrying for the Anfiled faithful.

They were also humbled 4-1 by Napoli in their opening Champions League Group A encounter earlier his week. Next up in Europe’s elite club competition is the visit of Ajax on Tuesday.

A visit to Stamford Bridge next Sunday follows as the FA Cup and EFL Cup champions look to kick-start their campaign. They have key players missing but cannot do anything about new recruits until after the World Cup.

Whether Sangare arrives early in the new year only time will tell. But Liverpool certainly need a spark to ensure they are in with a chance of landing silverware in 2023.
