Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker will both miss the Community Shield clash, with the former out for a “while”.

The Reds continued their pre-season preparations on Thursday with an all-action 1-0 defeat to RB Salzburg. The match proved a different test following the 5-0 win over RB Leipzig, but a step towards the new campaign all the same.

Liverpool consequently got a better look at how they are shaping up ahead of the new Premier League season.

But they already have injury concerns to worry about. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jota and Alisson have all suffered injuries.

Klopp was previously more hopeful about a swift return for Alisson. While he will not be able to face Manchester City on Saturday, he should be back for Liverpool‘s Premier League opener at Fulham.

Jota, though, will take longer to return and there is similar uncertainty about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s condition.

Klopp told a press conference: “No, Alisson and Diogo have no [chance].

“Ali trained today more than the day before so he will be definitely available for Fulham, but not for the weekend,” the boss said on Thursday.

“And the same for Diogo. Diogo was not here with us so how could he play a football game? That will take a while unfortunately. That’s it.”

Klopp offers Community Shield preview

Liverpool, last season’s FA Cup winners, face off with Premier League champions City at Leicester’s King Power Stadium.

There was nothing between the sides last season – bar a point at the end of the league season.

Two 2-2 draws mean Saturday’s clash is a chance for one of the teams to be victorious in the ever-growing rivalry again.

Klopp said: “It’s an important game but we train for the entire season, we cannot ignore that. “We have to extend our pre-season if you like into the season.

“We have a friendly on Sunday with Strasbourg, then Fulham, then a game after that.”

Indeed, the Liverpool Echo reports that Klopp will play Aston Villa behind closed doors on Sunday August 7.

Liverpool gearing up for new season

Liverpool have shown exciting flashes of their talent in pre-season – but also things to work on.

Klopp admitted after Thursday’s defeat to Salzburg that he didn’t like how isolated new striker signing Darwin Nunez was.

But he lauded new midfielder Fabio Carvalho for his creativity as a youngster who can develop in the first team.

The biggest test of the new season is coming yet for Liverpool with City in the Community Shield. Victory can see them put an early marker down for the campaign.
