Jurgen Klopp still plans to return to Germany after Liverpool contract ends

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed his current plan is to depart Liverpool when his contract runs out in 2024.

The title-winning manager signed his extension in December last year and if he does leave then, he will have spent just over eight-and-a-half years at Anfield, having joined in late 2015.

Having experienced success in his home nation with Borussia Dortmund, Klopp has taken Liverpool to two Champions League finals so far, winning one, as well as a League Cup final and Europa League final—both lost—before this year’s triumph in the Premier League. He also led the team to the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup earlier in 2019/20.

Asked by SWR on his long-term plans in management, Klopp’s answer was emphatic: “Four years in Liverpool.”

When the job is complete, though, he plans to return to Germany and ”do nothing for a year”.

Klopp insisted that he had to give a job his maximum effort and attention or nothing at all, so a spell away would allow him to re-energise.

And he intends to go back to Germany in the long term, but stopped short of suggesting he would take over the German national team or any particular club when asked.

“Definitely [to Germany] to live, after my career. Most likely even to Mainz. But in five years the world can look very different again.”

His next job, however, will be keeping his Liverpool team at the consistent level they have set over the past two years, and ensuring the right pieces are in place so that success can continue after his departure.
