Just IN: Dale Steyn Announces Retirement From All Forms Of The Game

South African pace bowler Dale Steyn has announced retirement from international cricket at the age of 38 years. He confirmed the decision in a heartfelt message posted on social media site, Twitter.

Steyn is often regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. He made his debut in December 2004 against England. The 38-year-old holds the record of being the No.1 ranked bowler in ICC Test rankings for a staggering 263 weeks between 2008 and 2014.

Steyn picked up 439 wickets in just 93 Tests, including a best of 7/51 against India at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. The tally is also the highest by a South African, with Shaun Pollock coming in next with 421 wickets.

He had retired from the longest format of the game on August 5, 2019, to focus on the white-ball matches. In the latest development, Steyn bid goodbye to all formats of the game, through a message on Twitter. He penned a song from his favorite band, The Counting Crows, to sum up his amazing career that lasted for 17 long years.

“It’s been 20 years of training, matches, travel, wins, losses, strapped feet, jet lag, joy, and brotherhood. There are too many memories to tell. Too many faces to thank. So I left it to the experts to sum up, my favorite band, the Counting Crows.”

“Today I officially retire from the game I love the most. Bitter sweet but grateful. Thank you to everyone, from family to teammates, journalists to fans, it’s been a incredible journey together,” Steyn wrote.

AB de Villiers congratulated Dale Steyn on his career

Former South African player AB de Villiers replied to Dale Steyn’s announcement. The duo was part of arguably the greatest Test team under Graeme Smith‘s captaincy. They debuted in Tests together, and have celebrated most of South Africa’s biggest wins.

“Great player, great man, amazing memories! U picked a good song to sign off my bud. Legend forever!” AB de Villiers commented.

Dale Steyn is well known for being an aggressive and in-your-face type of bowler. His average speed was generally in the high 140’s, with his fastest delivery being 156.7kmph he recorded while playing for RCB in the IPL 2010.
