A predominantly new-ball bowler who has developed death-bowling skills, Deepak Chahar impressed everyone with his batting ability and maturity in the second ODI against Sri Lanka a couple of months ago. The pacer played a brilliant hand of 69* in a tricky run-chase which sealed the series for India.

Deepak Chahar staged a terrific 84-run stand for the 8th wicket with Bhuvneshwar Kumar to complete the run chase. He then received an appreciation message from Dhoni for his commendable effort with the bat.

The pacer went in to bat at 160/6 and saw the score tumble further to 193/7 in the chase of 276. He revealed that he wasn’t thinking about the end result of the game, but just wanted to take the game till the end.

“Finally I got an opportunity to bat in one match and made good use of it. When I padded up, I saw wickets falling and then when I was next. I was not thinking about winning the match, I was just thinking about playing all the overs so that we can take the match closer, and when the match gets close, anything can happen,” Deepak Chahar said in an interaction with the CSK franchise.

My target was to play them off and target other bowlers: Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar played out the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera cautiously while playing attacking shots to other bowlers – an indication of his calmness and match-awareness.

“I started very defensively. I remember I defended a few full tosses also. That particular match, I was playing what the situation demanded. I was taking the risk on the weakest bowler of that team. Hasaranga and Chameera were bowling really well, so my target was to play them off and target other bowlers,” he said.

The Agra-born pacer then stated that he had been looking at the scoreboard occasionally, and decided to play risky shots once he felt the need for it.

“After every over, I was looking at the scoreboard. After every over, I used to see how many balls left, how many runs and do I need to take risk? When the runs went ahead of balls, I started hitting a few shots,” the 29-year-old concluded.

Deepak Chahar, who has a T20I hat-trick to his name, has been named as one of the three reserves in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Before that, he will be seen in action during the second half of the IPL 2021 in the yellow jersey.
