Fulham are leading the race to sign Justin Kluivert from AS Roma and could do so this week, according to reports in Italy.
Kluivert has been linked with a Premier League transfer for a number of years. However, the calibre of club mentioned in reports surrounding his future has decreased over time. Indeed, he has not lived up to his potential since leaving Ajax for Roma in 2018.
Prior to that move, Kluivert was linked with the likes of Manchester United. During his two seasons in the Roma first team, he became a potential target for Arsenal. Nothing ever materialised, with the winger instead spending the past two seasons on loan away from the Serie A side.
Following the conclusion of his most recent stint, with Nice in Ligue 1, Kluivert was mentioned as a possible option for West Ham. But rather than having European football on offer, now he looks more likely to sign for a club who are new to the Premier League this season.
There have been growing reports about an interest from Fulham. Now, Corriere Dello Sport have affirmed that last season’s Championship winners are in pole position to win the race for Kluivert.
He only has one year remaining on his contract with Roma and is not in Jose Mourinho’s first-team plans there.
Therefore, Kluivert could be gettable for Fulham. The main obstacle at the moment is the formula of the transfer.
Corriere Dello Sport confirm that Fulham would rather take the Dutchman on an initial loan deal. However, due to Kluivert’s contract situation, it will only be possible if it contains an obligation to buy him in 2023.
Previous reports have indicated that Fulham would be willing to pay around €9.5million (£8million) to acquire the 23-year-old. How that valuation may differ in a year’s time is unclear.
Fulham could give Justin Kluivert fresh start
In all honesty, Kluivert’s career has stalled significantly over the past four years. He struggled for consistency at Roma, where he wasn’t up to standard.
A stint with RB Leipzig was also uninspiring, until he fared slightly better with Nice last season. But still bound to the club where he has not performed, Kluivert needs to find an escape route.
Roma would also benefit from his departure, since they could clear space on the wage bill for someone they would actually use. With that in mind, they want his sale sorted by the end of the week, during which they are trying to sign free-agent striker, Andrea Belotti.
Hence, it seems to be in everyone’s best interests to allow Kluivert to complete his move to Fulham. A fast player with good finishing, he may be a better fit in the Premier League.
On the pitch, his decision making is one area that needs to improve, though. Off the pitch, he would be hoping any choice to join Fulham would be the right one.
