Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt could be on the move this summer with Chelsea one possible destination, according to reports in Italy.

The Netherlands international scored three goals this season in 42 appearances in all competitions for the Old Lady with Juventus now finishing fourth two seasons in a row in Serie A.

There have been negotiations between De Ligt’s representatives and Juventus over extending his deal at the club with the former Ajax defender commenting on their progress recently.

“Negotiations are ongoing at the moment and when the time comes, I will decide whether to extend or look elsewhere. I always look at what is best for me in terms of the sporting project,” De Ligt told reporters.

“Two consecutive fourth-place finishes are not enough. We have to make progress in that direction because these are disappointing results. Juventus are a club that always wants to be, and must become, champions.”

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claim that a transfer to Chelsea this summer would be the ‘most logical destination’ with De Ligt having a €120m (£102m) release clause in his current deal.

Chelsea are looking to bring in at least one centre-back in the summer transfer window with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both leaving for La Liga at the end of the month.

Corriere Torino also touches on interest from Chelsea with Thomas Tuchel’s side ‘forcing’ the issue as they look to secure his signature, while they add that De Ligt wants Juventus to reduce his release clause to €70-80m if he signs a new contract.

Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Noel Whelan reckons Conor Gallagher will play a “major role” at Chelsea next season after his successful loan spell at Crystal Palace.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I’m sure he’ll play a major role next season.

“The part he has played at Palace has shown what a talent he is. He’s had rave reviews, goals, and assists – so why wouldn’t they give him an opportunity?

“They are overloaded in that midfield area, but there could well be a few outgoings. He is a British-based player as well, and that’s really valuable to a club like Chelsea.

“He’s made his name in the Premier League now. He’s got that quality – just look at Mason Mount and how he adapted. There’s no reason Gallagher will be any different.”
