Leeds United supporters face a nervous wait to see if Kalvin Phillips remains at Elland Road beyond this summer with the next few weeks entirely key to his future.

The homegrown hero has become something of a talismanic figure at Elland Road. Since being converted into a defensive midfielder by previous boss Marcelo Bielsa, the star has gone on to achieve international honours with England.

Now 26 and with two years left on his deal, Phillips finds himself very much a man in demand. Indeed, the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham are all being linked with big-money moves for the midfielder.

However, recent links with Manchester United are seemingly growing louder than ever. That’s despite a pretty clear message from the player over what he thinks about the Red Devils.

That said, reports are indicating that Phillips would like to stay at Elland Road and sign a new deal. He’s reportedly willing to commit to a new deal and is seemingly seeking a package worth £100,000 a week.

And an extended stay with the West Yorkshire club is very much the message being put out there by his agent, Kevin Sharp.

However, any such decision on a new contract remains on hold.

Leeds are currently right in the thick of a relegation battle. And demotion to the second tier will leave Leeds no choice but to cash in on the midfielder.

As documented, there will be no shortage of takers.

Radrizzani waiting until June

That, though, is not the only issue clouding Phillips’ hopes over a new deal at Leeds.

As per the Daily Star‘s Jeremy Cross, he claims Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani is currently unprepared to offer Phillips a new £100,000 a week deal.

He states any decision on his future remains on hold until June.

However, if Leeds do avoid then Radrizzani and Co are reportedly confident that Phillips will sign fresh terms.

Leeds are currently just two points clear of the relegation zone, having played a game more than 18th-placed Everton.

The Whites though face a tricky run of games with matches at Arsenal and then home to Chelsea next.

As well as Everton, Burnley are also firmly in the mix. However, a great run of form from the Clarets has lifted them above Leeds on goal difference.

Leeds left with no choice but to wait on Kalvin Phillips

The next four games are critical to Leeds’ future. Avoiding the drop will be seen as a big win for the club, given the injury issues they have faced this season.

That said, the club are currently enjoying a run of one defeat in six games; form which will give them confidence going into the final four.

Should they avoid the drop, Leeds United will, quite rightly, give Phillips the bumper new deal he is worthy of. However, with their Premier League lives on the line, they have been left with no choice but to play the waiting game.

But a failure to retain their Premier League place with inevitably lead to a parting of ways. With two years left on his deal, Radrizzani knows Kalvin Phillips will command a fee in excess of £50m.

Should they stay up though lessons will also have to be learned by the club. Leeds have been far too lightweight this season, with a number of injuries leaving them short and, ultimately, in serious relegation peril.

Meanwhile, United must do without the services of Stuart Dallas for the rest of the season, having suffered a fractured thigh bone against Manchester City.
