Manchester City’s hopes of signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer could be scuppered by another European heavyweight.

Pep Guardiola is known to be a huge admirer of the England star’s talents, and with Phillips only having two years left on his current Elland Road contract a move to the current Premier League champions is being strongly mooted.

A fee in the region of £45-50m is likely to be enough to reluctantly tempt Leeds into a deal for their homegrown favourite.

However, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, there are admiring eyes from Paris in the 26-year-old.

The YEP claims that PSG called the Leeds board on Friday to make initial enquiries. Their line of questioning is said to have involved Phillips’ current availability and price.

However, that is as far as the interest went, with no official bid arriving from the Ligue 1 giants.

While that will be a fillip for City. It will also come as a warning that other clubs are looking to beat them to the punch.

In all likelihood though, Phillips will remain in the Premier League – especially in a World Cup year.

The classy midfielder is now a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England set-up. And while a Paris move would not necessarily harm his place in the squad, it could cost him the starting role he has worked so hard to earn.

There is also the current uncertainty over who will be in charge of PSG next season.

Despite winning Ligue 1 last season, PSG’s failure in the Champions League is set to cost Mauricio Pochettino his job. Christophe Galtier is now the favourite for the role after Zinedine Zidane dropped out.

City starting spot not a given

Moving to City also has its own risks though, given their packed squad of internationals.

Phillips would effectively be competing with the outstanding Rodri for a starting spot, especially with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva nailed-on starters in midfield.

The Leeds star will also look at how Jack Grealish’s first season at The Etihad has gone.

Phillips’ international team-mate tasted Premier League success but did not earn the number of starts his £100m fee warranted.

With that in mind, it shows that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side and that Phillips and Leeds have a big call to make.
