Manchester City are reportedly preparing to make their opening Kalvin Phillips transfer move next week in a bid to prise the star away from Leeds United.

The homegrown star is one of Leeds’ biggest assets, having come through their academy to become an established England international. He has impressed throughout Leeds’ last two seasons in the Premier League, though his long injury absence saw the Whites skate dangerously close to relegation.

But with Leeds now safe, focus now turns to the club’s transfer business for the summer window. And despite a number of incomings expected, it will be their potential outgoings which will concern supporters the most.

Another star man, Raphinha, is also garnering serious transfer interest with Barcelona strongly linked. However, with their finances in a mess, that deal is not likely to reach a conclusion any time soon.

Worrying for Leeds, though, is that Manchester City have no concerns with finances and their potential signings. And when it comes to their potential recruits, manager Pep Guardiola – more often than not – usually gets his own way.

As such, Leeds will no doubt be alarmed that the City boss reportedly now has Phillips right at the top of his wishlist.

With Fernandinho departing the Etihad, City have space in their squad for a new defensive midfielder. And reports have been growing for weeks that a move to the Citzyens could be on the cards.

Now, according to 90min, an opening offer for Phillips is expected to arrive shortly.

They claim City scouts have been hugely impressed by Phillips’ development at Leeds and believe he would slot seamlessly into their side.

They write that they are currently performing background checks on the midfielder to ensure he will be a good fit in their dressing room.

And with just two years left on his Leeds deal, 90min report that United are bracing themselves for his possible departure.

Kalvin Phillips transfer to City holds appeal

Phillips has reportedly made clear his loyalty to Leeds and apparent willingness to sign a new deal. However, with the club embroiled in a relegation dogfight, all talks were placed on hold.

And Leeds United know they won’t be able to match any financial package offered to Phillips by City.

Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham are also keen on the star, though their prospects are all seemingly on the wane.

That’s after 90min claims that a move to the Etihad would appeal to Phillips. They are one of the few clubs he could leave Leeds for with the blessing of the majority of their supporters.

A Kalvin Phillips transfer to Manchester City has also earned the backing of Leeds legend Jonny Giles.

A star of Don Revie’s great sides of the 1960s and 70s, Giles reckons a move to City would see Phillips take his game to another level.

Asked if Phillips would fit into Guardiola’s side, Giles told Off the Ball: “Yes, I think so because they talk about him being the defensive midfielder, but I think he could do more, but I don’t think he’s being asked to do it.

“I think his distribution is very good. When I see him hitting the long pass, he’s well able to do it with both feet, but I get the impression that he is only the defensive player at Leeds and there isn’t much more expected of him.

“Whereas maybe if he does go to City, I expect more of him. If I was his manager, I’d say to him you have the ability, but you have to be more creative. You’ve got to dominate more. I’d expect him to be more creative.

“He has the ability to do it. He’ll be around fantastic players.”

Leeds would struggle to keep Phillips from City

Truth be told, there are few Leeds fans who would begrudge Phillips a move to Manchester City. They are always a club in the mix for the top trophies. And, as much as he loves Leeds, that’s something he will unlikely experience at Elland Road.

Players only have a short career and at 26, Phillips, may only have another four to six seasons left at the top.

Granted, he will always be adored by the Leeds faithful. But seeing him move to Liverpool or (worse still) Manchester United would have stained that forever. Not City though. They are one of the few big clubs Leeds do not share a fierce rivalry with.

While his exit would hurt, Leeds know this is the last summer where they can maximise his value.

Furthermore, at just 45 minutes away by car, Phillips could probably still carry on living at his Leeds base.

Leeds though would need to ensure they are receiving a fee that is fair for a player of his standing. And £50m would not be deemed unfair for a player of his standing.

Leeds, meanwhile, are chasing a deal for Valentin Castellanos after Manchester City cleared the path for Jesse Marsch to pounce.
