Kamaiu Johnson WDs from Farmers Insurance Open with COVID-19, mom suddenly hospitalized in Florida
Kamaiu Johnson was all set to make his first PGA Tour start this week.
The reigning Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour Championship winner had earned a sponsor’s exemption into the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego this week.
Yet on Tuesday night, Johnson was hit by COVID-19.
The 27-year-old withdrew from the tournament after testing positive for the coronavirus, and now has to quarantine in Southern California for 10 days.
"To say that I'm disappointed would be a massive understatement,'' Johnson said in a statement, via the PGA Tour. "I've dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour for a long, long time, but health and safety come first. It's times like these where you have to keep focusing on the big picture at hand, and from my experience, a fork in the road often has an interesting way of leading to new opportunities.
"Getting a glimpse of the Farmers Insurance Open and what it would be like to play on the PGA Tour only further ignites the fire inside me to work that much harder to chase the dream of playing on Tour full time. I am so thankful to Farmers Insurance and entire team at the Century Club of San Diego for not only providing me with this opportunity but also for all they're doing to promote diversity in golf and beyond.''
Johnson is now the fifth golfer this month to test positive and forced to withdraw from a tournament.
To make the situation worse, Johnson’s mom is also battling the coronavirus — and he told ESPN on Tuesday night that she had to be hospitalized while fighting pneumonia in Florida.
But, as he’s required to quarantine, Johnson is stuck on the other side of the country.

When Johnson will make it back to the PGA Tour remains to be seen. He was replaced in the field by Willie Mack III, who is also an APGA player and had earned a sponsor exemption into the Genesis Invitational.
"I have a great team doing some great things for me,” Johnson told ESPN. "I'm just going to continue to work hard, and whatever happens, happens.”
