Spurs confirm 'significant' ankle ligament damage for Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed striker Harry Kane suffered a ‘significant lateral ligament injury to his left ankle’.

The England star sustained the injury following a challenge with Manchester City’s Fabian Delph at Tottenham’s new stadium during their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg victory over the Premier League champions.

The injury will likely rule Kane out for the remainder of the 2018/19 season.

Tottenham also confirmed midfielder Dele Alli suffered a fractured hand in the same match.

A club statement said Alli will be assessed before Saturday's home Premier League match against Huddersfield Town.

Kane has 24 goals for Spurs this season but looks set to miss out on the Premier League Golden Boot for a second successive year, having won the award the previous two seasons.

If unavailable for selection, the forward will miss key fixtures in the race for fourth. Tottenham are two points behind third-placed Chelsea, who have played a game more, and one point ahead of north London rivals Arsenal, who are fifth.

Kane will also miss the second leg of the Champions League encounter at Manchester City, with Spurs holding a 1-0 advantage. The 25-year-old would miss the possible semi-finals and final should Spurs progress.
