Karius has no regrets over Liverpool move despite tough period

Loris Karius does not rue swapping Mainz for Liverpool last summer despite enduring a difficult debut season in the Premier League.

The goalkeeper, who was signedfor £4.75 million with the view to being the club’s number one, has not started since the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Wolves on January 28.

Having suffered a broken bone in his right hand during pre-season, Karius had to bide his time before he could be fielded between the sticks.

That eventually happened in mid-September, but after errors against Bournemouth and West Ham before the festive period, he was heavily criticised.

Simon Mignolet was restored in goal for the 3-0 victory over Middlesborough on December 14, with the 23-year-old only playing in the cup games.

The challenging settling-in period has, however, not affected Karius’ feelings about his transfer.

"I do not regret coming here,” he told SID.

“I am happy to be here every day.

"When I came here, my aim was to be the number one and that is still my claim.

“But after my hand injury in the summer I needed a little longer to find my form again.

“Now I want to help the team on the pitch to reach our big goal, a place in the Champions League.

“I am more than ready. I train on a very high level and I am physically in top shape."

On the battle to be Liverpool’s first-choice keeper, Karius added: "My relationship with Mignolet is normal. We can only get better in training if we work in the same direction. But it is obvious we both want to play."

Andreas Kopke, Germany’s goalkeeper coach has named the Reds stopper as one of the options to deputise for Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

"Of course I am happy about that,” he said. “Sooner or later I want to be a part of that team. Since I played well in the Bundesliga for several years I am not surprised I am one of the candidates behind Manuel Neuer."
