Karl Lacey lauds “exciting” return of Donegal legend Michael Murphy following retirement u-turn
Karl Lacey says the return of former All-Ireland winning captain Michael Murphy is great news for Donegal.
The Glenswilly clubman is back with Donegal a full two years after announcing his retirement from the inter-county game.
Murphy was also part of Jim Gavin’s Football Review Committee. The proposed new playing rules for Gaelic football will be voted on at Special Congress on November 30 and that might have influenced his decision to resume his county career.

Speaking after guiding Kilcoo past the challenge of Crosserlough of Cavan in Saturday night’s Ulster Club SFC quarter-final, Lacey said he was excited about the prospect of watching Murphy play for Donegal once again.
“Knowing Michael, he would have taken time in making his decision, it wouldn’t imagine it would have been just one phone call with Jim McGuinness and everything is rosy in the garden,” stated Lacey.
“Micheal is a deep thinker and he would analyse himself, he would go through every little detail in terms of what needs to be done to hit that level again.
“He is obviously confident that he can and in the conversations he has had with the people around him.
“Listen, he is a fabulous footballer, he always was, he is a great leader, a great Donegal person and it is exciting for us and Donegal supporters to sit in stand and watch him and see him pull the jersey back on and I wish him all the best and I hope it goes well for him.”
Following their hard-fought 0-15 to 1-10 over Crosserlough, Kilcoo await the winners of Saturday’s rescheduled quarter-final clash between Monaghan kingpins Scotstown and Fermanagh champions Erne Gaels in the last four of the provincial series.
