Kasper Schmeichel shares Celtic own goal blame as Cameron Carter-Vickers' bacon saved

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel refused to blame defender Cameron Carter-Vickers for turning the ball into his own net against Club Brugge on Wednesday evening - instead stating that winger Nicolas Kuhn could have passed the ball to him and that the Parkhead crowd's volume didn't help proceedings.

With Kuhn under pressure in his own half, Schmeichel made a wide option for him - though the German instead passed the ball to Carter-Vickers. Thinking that the Dane would have been between the sticks, the defender blindly passed the ball towards going, only to react in horror with Schmeichel unable to scramble back in time, with Celtic going a goal down.

But despite the calamity, Schmeichel refused to blame Carter-Vickers - instead stating that Kuhn could have passed him the ball, and that the Parkhead crowd was too loud for the Austrian to have heard him in a catalogue of errors.

Initially asked if a draw was a fair result in the end, the Danish stopper told TNT Sports:

"Probably, on reflection. We weren't ourselves in the first half. We didn't get up to the tempo of the game or play at the intensity that we know we can. Luckily we had half-time to change that and change our press a little bit and things got better in the second half."

The own goal was the major talking point, though Schmeichel failed to shoulder Carter-Vickers with the blame, adding:

"It's one of those things. I am showing for Nicolas [Kuhn]. I think Nicolas could have passed to me. I think he does well to get the pass to Cam [Carter-Vickers], but he is surprised by it and obviously he is getting pressed. It is so loud in here that he hasn't heard me. It is one of those things. We just move on it happens."

And, when asked if he was happy with the result, the one-time Premier League winner said:

"Yeah, reasonably. There was chances to win and chances from them as well. Reasonably happy."
