Brentford are about to break their transfer record for the second time this summer after agreeing to sign Keane Lewis-Potter from Hull City, according to reports.

Last week, Brentford spent bigger than they ever had before to bring Scotland international Aaron Hickey back to British football from Italian Serie A side Bologna. Now, they are on the verge of another deal that would eclipse that £14million arrangement.

The Bees have been working on a swoop for Hull City winger Lewis-Potter. They submitted a bid at the end of June worth an initial £16m, plus £4m in add-ons.

Now, The Athletic have provided an update that the transfer is on the verge of completion. Brentford’s bid has been accepted, after their two previous failed attempts last summer and in January.

In turn, Hull City have given permission for Lewis-Potter to discuss personal terms with the Premier League club. Brentford have booked his medical for Monday after he left his current club’s pre-season training camp in Turkey.

Should he come through his medical successfully, he will be able to become Brentford’s second signing of the summer.

It would bring an end to his lengthy association with hometown club Hull City. He joined their academy in 2015 and has been in their senior side since 2019.

Lewis-Potter has spent three full seasons as a regular for the Tigers. Last season, after stepping up from League One to the Championship, he contributed 13 goals from 48 appearances in all competitions. In turn, he won the awards for Hull City’s players’ player of the season, fans’ player of the season and manager’s player of the season.

New challenge for Keane Lewis-Potter

Now, he could be ready to progress up another tier. Brentford are about to embark on a second consecutive season in the Premier League. They are building an interesting project with some young talents, of which Lewis-Potter should be the next.

It is not very often a player moves up a division in three consecutive seasons. After winning promotion from League One to the Championship with Hull City in 2020-21, before being on the verge of a Premier League transfer a year later, that is what Lewis-Potter is about to do.

There are high hopes for the England under-21 international. This will be his biggest challenge yet, though, as he steps up to the top tier.

Still only 21 years old, he will have to play without fear and use the experiences he has built up in the EFL to his advantage.

Having scored double figures of goals in each of the past two seasons, it will be interesting to see what he can manage in the highest division.
