There must be a decent chance that Brains can make every yard of the running under William Buick.

Apart from Stockpyle, who has no form over this trip, Brains is the only confirmed front-runner in the line-up and although stall seven isnot ideal, it is plenty good enough to launch his bid.

For a field of a dozen older all-weather handicappers, it is unusual that only three of them have ever won over this course and distance before, with Brains' tally of four more than all of his eleven rivals put together, so he certainly knows how to win under these conditions. He loves nothing better than to control the pace from the front, and the last three of his four course/distance wins were achieved in that way, and all when wearing blinkers to boot. Suggested bet: Brains to win the 14:40 at Kempton

His previously successful blinkers were left off for the first five runs for his new stable - all unsuccessful, but he promptly bounced back to winning form when the blinkers were restored, clocking up two wins and two third-place finishes at both Lingfield and Wolverhampton. And on his most recent outing, he was involved in a contested early pace which set the race up for the closers, but he still did much the best of those who raced prominently, so his effort needs marking up. Off an unchanged mark, he is clearly in the sort of form to win again, especially back here again, with Buick an obviously strong booking. Next best bet: Naval Commander Of the others, Naval Commander was narrowly beaten a short-head by the 101-rated Positive in a higher-graded Class 2 handicap over this trip, with the pair 3.5 lengths clear of seven others. That is a strong piece of form and a repeat will put him right in the picture despite a four-pound higher mark, although his only previous course win (from six visits) came over 11 furlongs, so he will want a repeat of the contested pace that he got here last time.
