Kenny Miller names two Rangers stars that are MUST keeps along with transfer necessity

Kenny Miller reckons Rangers absolutely must keep Jack Butland and James Tavernier as they undergo a rebuild.

There will be major changes to Philippe Clement's squad this summer as he attempts to build a side capable of wrestling the title back from Celtic's grasp. Brazlian left-back Jefte has already been signed while it was confirmed yesterday Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Jon McLaughlin and Kemar Roofe will all move on as free agents.

There will be further departures but Miller does not want to see the key defensive duo among them. Butland was the subject of an offer from Nottingham Forest in January and could attract interest again while there has been suggestion Steven Gerrard is lining Tavernier and Connor Goldson for his Al-Ettifaq side in Saudi Arabia. The former Ibrox striker sees it as crucial to keep hold of the reliable goalkeeper and the captain.

He told the Daily Record: "If you’re talking about building a new-look side there has to be a core and a spine. For me, Jack Butland is absolutely vital to that. Forget his mistake in the Scottish Cup Final, the keeper has been outstanding since his arrival. There could be bids for him this summer – there’s no getting away from that. And a monster offer might need to be accepted to fund Clement’s spending elsewhere. But if he had the choice he’d rather keep Butland and I think it’s imperative that he’s No.1 next season.

"After Butland, the next guy I’d want to keep would be the captain, James Tavernier. Everyone knows I’m a huge fan and, despite some of the criticism he has received, you can’t argue with what he gives the team going forward in terms of goals and assists. He has two years left on his contract and unless a big bid comes in, I’d expect him to lead Clement’s side again."

In terms of additions, Miller has pinpointed the striking department as the most important area to add quality. He feels they were too far behind Celtic in that position and can't see Clement going forward with Danilo and Cyriel Dessers as his two options.

He added: "If he can get Abdallah Sima and Oscar Cortes back on season-long loan deals, I reckon he’d do it immediately. That would go a long way to fixing Rangers’ attacking third. On top of that I think a striker is a MUST this summer. For me, this is the key area the manager has to address this summer. Because it simply wasn’t up to scratch last season, when you compare it to Celtic’s forward line.

"Roofe is moving on which leaves Cyriel Dessers and Danilo as the two main centre-forwards. Now, it’s absolutely vital that Clement signs a new No.9. He should probably have done it in January to boost the title bid. But if he does get a new striker in – whether that’s Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland or anyone else – I can’t see Dessers and Danilo being happy as back-ups. The manager would probably look to move one of them on. And after the season he’s just had, scoring 23 goals, Dessers will probably attract more interest."
