Is Kevin Durant's 'final stop' with the Nets? As of 'this second, yes'

Kevin Durant was busy on the keyboard recently, answering questions for The Player Tribune’s “Text Message Talk Show” with Dorrell Wright.

The Brooklyn Nets star answered some quick hitters, such as changing his number and who the best NBA MVPs and WNBA players are of all time. Then he got into the heavy stuff: rehabbing an Achilles injury, preparing to play for Hall of Famer Steve Nash and, of course, if he’ll be switching teams again.

Durant, 32, signed a four-year, $164 million deal with the Nets in free agency after his injury in the 2019 NBA Finals while with the Golden State Warriors. Prior to that he had a highly publicized exit from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The new contract offers an opt-out after the third season, so he could go back into free agency in 2022. But at the moment of the text message, which appeared to be conducted at the end of September and released on Thursday, he isn’t planning on using it.

“So is Brooklyn the final stop?” Wright asked in the exchange

“As of today, this second, yes...” Durant wrote back.

In September, the Nets hired Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash as their next head coach. With Durant back from his injury, they will be immediate title contenders. Kyrie Irving also signed with the Nets in the lat free agency period. He had shoulder surgery and played in only 20 games during the 2019-20 season.

“I’m excited about Coach Nash...I think he’s gonna build a fun culture in Brooklyn...having a former player walk the sidelines is always dope to see,” Durant wrote.

Durant is expected to be back fully healthy for 2020-21. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the earliest the new season would start is Dec. 25, but it likely won’t begin until January.
