Key takeaways from Paraag Marathe chat on Leeds United, Rangers and Elland Road
Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has decided to clear the air on a number of burning club matters, but has also left ambiguity over others.
The 49ers Enterprises chief offered clarity on several topics at the Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit this week, his comments only being published on Wednesday. Since then, further reports on the 49ers’ ambitions to acquire a majority stake in Rangers have emerged.
And the future of United CEO Angus Kinnear has become a growing topic over recent days, amid claims that he is set to join Everton at the end of the season. Here are the key takeaways from what Marathe told last week’s summit.

No Red Bull buy-out
Marathe dismissed the speculation that Red Bull have indicated an ambition to take over control of the club in the coming years. There had been brief rumours that the company, which currently owns a minority stake in United, could seek a buy-out in its long-term vision.
However, Marathe dismissed the notion of a future Red Bull takeover. He said: "That's not contemplated at all. There is no language to that effect. It's not something we have discussed ever."
Rangers takeover
As expected, Marathe was tight-lipped about the 49ers being linked with a takeover of Rangers. However, he refused to shut down the rumours and confirmed that the firm is looking to expand its portfolio.
"I can't really comment on whatever rumours might be out there. But we are looking at other opportunities,” Marathe said regarding the Rangers links.
“It is doable to replicate the passion [of Leeds]. What we are looking for is clubs with the right bones, history of success and potential for growth.
“And if you are a sports person, and you love it and treat it as a way of life like I do, then absolutely there is enough room in your heart to love all your sports properties, just like there is to love all your children!"
Elland Road expansion
Plans to expand Elland Road have been known for some time and Marathe has confirmed that he hopes the stadium will ultimately eclipse a capacity of 50,000. He told fans to expect some announcements soon, with the early groundwork already conducted.
He said: "Our goal is to expand Elland Road. There will probably be a couple of phases that ultimately take us to 53,000. The first phase will likely be 47,000 then up to 53,000.
"Of paramount importance is to keep the cauldron and electricity of the stadium the same as it is today. Elland Road is a stadium managers and players of other clubs don't like playing at. It's been called a cauldron and a hurricane of noise.
"It is really important for us to get more of our supporters into the stadium, and make it even more difficult for other clubs to come and play in, but we want to preserve some of the magic of what Elland Road is.
"We have done a lot of the pre-development work, in picking architects and working with the local council. There are probably some announcements to come and I am really excited about that."
