Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has told Arsenal that he “doesn’t want to move in January”, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners are looking to bring in at least a couple of players in the January transfer window to help them consolidate their place at the top of the Premier League table.
Mikel Arteta’s side are currently eight points ahead of second-placed Manchester City after 18 Premier League matches but their resolve will be tested over the next month with City and third-placed Manchester United to play in their next five league matches.
After missing out on Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk to Chelsea, Romano confirmed earlier today that Arsenal are now in “advanced” negotiations to sign Brighton winger Leandro Trossard with an “official bid” ready to go after agreeing personal terms.
Trossard’s compatriot Tielemans is another player who has been linked to Arsenal over the summer and into January, with the Leicester City midfielder out of contract at the end of June.
There have been rumours that Arsenal could try and land him in January for a knockdown price but Romano insists that Tielemans won’t be going anywhere until the summer.
Romano told wettfreunde: “Arsenal have always wanted Tielemans in the club and they still do. But Tielemans doesn’t want to move in January.
“His contract is expiring in the summer and he wants to move on a free transfer.”
The transfer expert added: “Arsenal’s focus right now is on signing a winger and a striker.
“Their focus right now is not on a midfielder but of course that can change in the final days if the right player becomes an opportunity.”
Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, who has contributed six goals and two assists for the Eagles this term, is another player on the Gunners’ list with the Ivory Coast international out of contract at the end of the season.
There have been rumours Arsenal and other clubs could even try and sign Zaha in this transfer window but Romano insists it is “quiet” on their interest in the former Manchester United man.
Romano wrote in his Caught Offside column: “Everything is quiet on Wilfried Zaha for the moment, and Arsenal will not sign players for the sake of it. They will consider possibilities, whether on loan or permanent, but it has to be the right player.”
Speaking about his future in November, Zaha said: “How many times have I seen my name next to transfer stuff – I never speak on these things.
“My contract is up when my contract is up and the only thing I am focused on is doing well for the club, that’s it. I take each day as it comes.
“I don’t know what will happen in the future. I can’t say this is my plan as I’m only fixated on what I’m going to do in training and then on Sunday [against West Ham].
“I’m very devoted to Palace and that’s all I’m thinking about.”
