Khabib Nurmagomedov Returns to Fight Tony Ferguson in December

Khabib Nurmagomedov Crowned Lightweight Champion with Lopsided Win Over Al Iaquinta at UFC 223

UFC officials recently announced that The Ultimate Fighter Finale for season 22 would take place on Friday, Dec. 11, in Las Vegas, the night before UFC 194: Aldo vs. McGregor also takes place in Sin City. On Friday, they revealed a key lightweight bout for the fight card.

Number-three ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov will square off with Tony Ferguson, who currently sits at number nine in the UFC lightweight rankings. The bout is certainly main event worthy, although the promotion has yet to declare a headliner or a venue for the TUF 22 Finale.

One of the top contenders in the lightweight division, Nurmagomedov (22-0) has been sidelined since April of 2014, struggling to recover from a severe knee injury.

A victory over Ferguson would make him a top contender once again, particularly since his last fight was a victory over current champion Rafael dos Anjos. The champ is expected to defend his belt against Donald Cerrone in the UFC on FOX 17 main event, also in December.

Ferguson (20-3) has emerged from The Ultimate Fighter as one of the UFC's most creative, and successful, 155-pound fighters. Since winning the season 13 tournament in 2011, Ferguson has amassed a 9-1 record under the UFC banner, and is currently on a six-fight winning streak.

Defeating Nurmagomedov would easily be his biggest victory to date. It would surely shoot Ferguson up the rankings and into immediate title contention.
