King Mo Happy to Get Paid and Get a Bellator Belt… at Any Weight

Over the course of nearly two years starting in 2013, former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion “King” Mo Lawal split six fights and appeared to have lost a lot of the steam he had built up at the beginning of his career.

Fortunately for Lawal, he’s been able to turn things around, and is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak, to which he credits his work with American Top Team among others for helping him get on track.

“The main thing is that I have a good supporting cast,” Lawal told MMAWeekly.com. “I’ve got great people at ATT that help me. I’m in a good position, a good place; it’s a great training situation. If you don’t have a good team, you’re not going anywhere in this sport.”

Eight years and nearly 25 fights into his career, Lawal still feels there’s room for improvement, and he’s not quite yet the fighter he feels he can be.

“I feel I’m still growing and learning every fight,” said Lawal. “I can’t say that I’m satisfied. I’m never satisfied, because I believe I can show more. As soon as you’re as good as you’re going to be, you’re going to start falling off.”

Most recently, Lawal returned to Japan, where he gained notoriety, to participate in RIZIN’s 2015 Grand Prix. Over the course of two events, Lawal dispatched three fighters on his way to taking the Grand Prix championship.

“It was a good feeling (returning to Japan),” Lawal said. “It was more like getting back to business. I was back home, but it was just I had people to knock out.

“It was challenging to go out there and fight in a tournament. At first, it was tough to relax out there. I was jetlagged, but at the same time I got the job done. But the last day, I felt good. I felt like I could have gone out there and had another fight.”

Lawal (19-4) returns to the U.S. on Saturday in San Jose, Calif., to take on UFC veteran Phil Davis in the 205-pound main event of Bellator 154.

“I’ve just got to fight my fight,” said Lawal of facing Davis. “He’s going to go out there and try to wrestle, which I’m cool with, I can wrestle. If he goes out there and tries to move, I’m cool because I can cut the cage off. I’ve got to press the fight. I’ve got to bring the fight.”

For Lawal, getting the Bellator light-heavyweight title that’s eluded him the last couple years would be a big step, but even if that doesn’t materialize, he’s more than willing to fight any champion he needs to in order to get what he wants.

“My goal is to get just get paid and get a belt, even if I have to fight Vitaly (Minakov) at heavyweight,” Lawal said. “As long as I’m getting paid, it’s all the same. I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now. It’s always fun to get paid to go out there and do what you love.”
