Kirk Cousins unconcerned about contracting COVID-19: 'If I die, I die'

Kirk Cousins does not seem concerned about contracting COVID-19 and the potential impacts of it.

“If it knocks me out, it knocks me out,” said Cousins, who added he doesn’t believe players can breathe through masks during workouts. “I’m going to be OK. You know, even if I die. If I die, I die. I kind of have peace about that.”

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback shared his thoughts on conducting the NFL season during the pandemic while on Spotify’s “10 Questions with Kyle Brandt” podcast. The second question went deep with the issue of the coronavirus and NFL protocols.

Cousins isn’t concerned about COVID-19

Brandt asked Cousins about the #WeWantToPlay tweets from NFL players in July. They voiced their desire to get back to the field, but also their want to do it safely.

Brandt asked if Cousins believed the NFL could do it safely and it led to a conversation on if masks, which are required at practices, help prevent the spread.

Cousins, 32, said there will be a dichotomy within the team between those who are very scared of contracting the virus and those who aren’t at all worried.

Brandt: “If 1 is the person who says, ‘Masks are stupid, you’re all a bunch of lemmings’ and 10 is, ‘I’m not leaving my master bathroom for the next 10 years,’ where do you land?”

Cousins: “I’m not gonna call anybody stupid, for the trouble it would get me in. But I’m about a .000001.”

Brandt: “Really? How come?”

Cousins: “I want to respect what other people’s concerns are. For me personally, if you’re just talking no one else can get the virus, what is your concern if you could get it, I would say I’m gonna go about my daily life. If I get it, I’m gonna ride it out. I’m gonna let nature do its course. Survival-of-the-fittest kind of approach. And just say, if it knocks me out, it knocks me out. I’m going to be OK. You know, even if I die. If I die, I die. I kind of have peace about that.”

Cousins will wear a mask for others

Cousins did add that his opinion on wearing a mask is “really about being respectful to other people.”

“It really has nothing to do with my own personal thoughts,” he said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing masks to help stop the spread. There is growing scientific research that face masks help reduce the transmission of droplets, which in turn slow the spread of the disease. Masks don’t have to be expensive and can be a simple homemade cloth one. They are supposed to be breathable and even those with chronic lung diseases should be able to wear a covering without a breathing issue.
