Liverpool are reportedly keen on Lille midfielder Amadou Onana, but two failed West Ham bids give the Reds a sign of the battle they would face to sign him.

Liverpool have made three signings so far this summer but it does not look like they will be making any more. Darwin Nunez is the marquee arrival up top, following Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern Munich.

Midfielder Fabio Carvalho and right-back Calvin Ramsay have also moved to Anfield. The teenage pair are not only prospects for the future, but they will expect first-team minutes this season.

Nevertheless, there have been calls for Liverpool to make another, more senior, midfield signing this summer.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham has emerged as the standout target. Still, there is a feeling Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wants to wait until next summer to go after the England star.

As for a signing this summer, The Athletic now claims that Liverpool are ‘still’ monitoring Lille’s Belgium international Onana. Klopp is in fact one of his ‘strongest’ admirers.

The 20-year-old moved to France last summer and played 31 Ligue 1 games. Onana also featured in Lille’s eight Champions League fixtures until their last-16 defeat to Chelsea.

More recently, though, West Ham have had perhaps the strongest interest in the one-cap international. In fact, they have reportedly made two bids, the second worth just over £25million.

The Athletic now also claims that Arsenal, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest are amongst Onana’s other admirers.

Amadou Onana a versatile option

Onana mainly played as a defensive midfielder last season. However, he also played in a central role and as an attacking midfielder on occasion.

The Belgian has also filled in at centre-back, making him a versatile player who could suit the Premier League.

Such a trait is longed for in the English top flight, especially among those clubs with some form of European football to contend with.

While players such as Onana can naturally play a variety of positions, they can also fill in during a potential injury crisis.

Liverpool need to sign midfielder

Liverpool used Fabinho in that ilk in the 2020/21 season, when Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all suffered long-term injuries.

And despite Klopp ruling out another midfield signing in no-nonsense fashion earlier this week, it is clear they could do with another option.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered an injury in pre-season against Crystal Palace on Friday.

Thiago Alcantara struggled with injury last season as well. Naby Keita enjoyed his best Liverpool season last term with 40 appearances, but he has a chequered injury record.

It is unlikely all three will stay fit throughout the entire season. Despite having options in the event of such injuries, Klopp has seen what an injury crisis can do to his team before.
