Jurgen Klopp has argued that football fans and the media have been too quick to judge Darwin Nunez and Manchester City star Erling Haaland.
Nunez and Haaland have been two of this summer’s marquee signings in the Premier League.
Haaland has been recognised as one of the brightest prospects in the world over the past few years as he was a prolific scorer for Borussia Dortmund.
Nunez meanwhile announced himself on the world scene last season, scoring 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica.
The forward was criticised during pre-season following a negative performance in a friendly. He was quick to silence these naysayers, scoring four times against RB Leipzig and he netted in the Community Shield versus Man City.
Haaland meanwhile was mocked after missing a sitter in the Community Shield, but he already has two goals to his name in the Premier League.
Liverpool face Crystal Palace in their first home game at Anfield of the 2022/23 Premier League season on Monday night.
Ahead of this clash, Klopp has taken this opportunity to defend both Nunez and Haaland:
“Five weeks ago we started pre-season, we had the first game and he didn’t look that great, obviously from the outside world, not for us,” Klopp said during an interview with Sky Sports.
“It’s crazy how quick we judge people… wow.
“Imagine if somebody did that to us and said, ‘First day of work, it didn’t work out. Go home, we never want to see you again! And you don’t get a second chance by the way’ – we would have all been long gone! No chance.
“Everybody can now see, ‘Ah he’s a proper striker’ – so good for us and good for him. He’s a handful and is a different type to what we had. He’s very lively and very energetic. Physically he’s really strong and technically he’s really good, that obviously goes together with being more settled and confident and more secure in yourself in a new environment.
“You can’t say, ‘Come on, you have to give me 100 per cent immediately’ – you have to develop it and that’s what we’re doing at the moment and in a good way.
“It’s funny as well, we won against Manchester City the week before the season and everybody was asking, ‘will Haaland score this and that? A week is like 10 years in football!”
