Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed concerns over a fresh hamstring injury for Diogo Jota, with Alisson Becker also suffering a fitness problem.

The Reds began pre-season on Tuesday with a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United. While the result showed early progress for new United boss Erik ten Hag, Klopp insisted he felt focused on player fitness.

Indeed, he used 32 players against the Red Devils, bringing on two lots of substitutions.

Goalkeeper Alisson played 45 minutes for Liverpool, with Adrian replacing the Brazilian at half time.

However, Portugal forward Jota did not take part in the friendly. He had returned to training on Wednesday evening following a hamstring problem he picked up in the Nations League in June.

But speaking in his latest press conference, Klopp revealed that Jota looks as though he has suffered a recurrence of the issue.

“So, Diogo is unlucky. Diogo was not involved [against United] because of an injury he got at the end of his season,” the manager said.

“He trained yesterday fully and got injured again, so that’s really not cool but we have to wait for the results. He had further assessment this morning so we have to see.”

When pressed on if Jota had suffered another hamstring injury, Klopp said: “We will see. The same region, yes.”

The German also revealed concerns for Alisson after his 45-minute spell in Bangkok.

“Ali was not 100 per cent,” Klopp said. “He finished the session earlier, was doing the warming up and felt something so now there we have to wait as well. I think pretty much all the others are fine, so that’s it.”

With over 30 players playing against United, Klopp added that “some might get 45 minutes” against Crystal Palace on Friday.

Klopp, Liverpool still feeling post-season effects

The fresh injury concerns for Liverpool come after their gruelling 63-game season last term.

The Reds played in every game possible. They won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup but missed out on the Champions League and Premier League.

Throw in Nations League and other international duty for their top stars such as Jota and it is clear to see why Liverpool are suffering problems in pre-season.

The situation is the same for every top Premier League club. However, Liverpool’s extra games pushed them to their limits.

Liverpool will hope Jota can recover in time for the start of the Premier League season in early August.
