The name Tim David has been buzzing around for the past year, and now finally he has received a call from an IPL franchise – the Royal Challengers Bangalore roped in the Singapore batsman for the UAE leg of IPL 2021 as a replacement of Finn Allen.

Changes galore in the RCB camp as, apart from Tim David, they brought in the Sri Lankan pair Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera as replacements for Adam Zampa and Daniel Sams. Two other players – Scott Kuggeleijn and Kane Richardson – will also not play in the UAE.

Head coach Simon Katich has also stepped down from his role due to personal reasons, and Mike Hesson, Director of cricket operations, will take over the coaching duties.

Who is Tim David?

While the other incoming replacements are well known in the international arena, Tim David, who represents Singapore, has made a name for himself as a hard-hitting batsman playing in the franchise leagues around the world.

The 25-year-old has featured in 49 T20 matches, in which he has scored 1171 runs, averaging 36.59 – but more importantly, striking at 155.09. In 14 T20Is for Singapore, the right-hander averages 46.50, while striking at 158.52.

Even before his international debut, Justin Langer had roped him in in his Perth Scorchers side in the Big Bash League after learning about his potential as a finisher. In the 2020/21 season, he played for the Hobart Hurricanes, and shined brightly in the BBL scoring at 153.29 and struck 14 sixes in the tournament.

Then, for the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL 2021., partly held in the UAE, he averaged 45 in 6 matches while cruising at 166.66. He has continued that terrific form for Surrey, recording two centuries and a fifty in his last four List-A matches.

Tim David, whose base price was 20 Lakhs in the IPL 2021 auction, went unsold. But now he is set to become part of his maiden IPL season. Mike Hesson is impressed by Tim David and reckons the youngster can be given the middle-order responsibilities should either AB de Villiers or Glenn Maxwell be unavailable.

“With Finn Allen leaving, we have decided to strengthen our middle-order possibilities, in terms of options, so Tim David has joined our squad. He is currently part of the Southern Brave [at the Hundred], he has been performing for Surrey and also Hobart Hurricanes in recent times – a power player who could become a straight swap for either [Glenn] Maxwell or AB de Villiers if required, also gives us other options throughout the order,” Hesson said after signing David.

RCB had a brilliant start to the season – for the first time they won their first four matches in a season. They sit on the third position with 5 wins and 2 losses. They will resume their season on September 20 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi.
