Burnley have opened contract talks with captain Josh Brownhill as they look to reward his outstanding form this season, TEAMtalk understands.

A number of Premier League clubs, including the likes of West Ham and Leeds, made approaches in the summer after their demotion from the Premier League. However, the Clarets – under new manager Vincent Kompany – batted them away, having made it clear they were determined to keep him.

Now with 18 months left on his current deal, we can reveal Burnley are in negotiations with the 27-year-old and his representatives.

And it’s easy to see why Kompany is desperate to get the midfielder tied down to a new deal. With the Clarets riding high at the top of the Championship, Brownhill is leading by example.

So far, he has five goals and six assists to his name this term, underlining his importance to the Clarets. As a result, we understand a host of top-flight clubs are again on his trail this month.

However, Brownhill’s focus remains with Burnley as they look to secure promotion as quickly as possible. And we understand the Clarets are working hard to persuade him to put pen-to-paper on a new long-term deal to secure his future to Turf Moor.

Brownhill joined the Clarets back in January 2020 from Bristol City.

He has clocked up 114 appearances in that time for the Clarets. And after making his 100th appearance earlier this season, the player sent supporters a message on his Twitter page.

‘100 appearances for Burnley. Very proud to have played for this club. Thank you for your messages of support throughout. PS – thank you for all the early birthday messages, love you all’.
