Kris Boyd in Chris Sutton fence-sitting jibe as pundits clash in Paulo Bernardo vs Arne Engels debate
Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton clash over whether Paulo Bernardo should start ahead of Arne Engels — and, as expected, neither was willing to let the other have the last word!
The ex-Celtic player was quizzed on whether or not Paulo Bernardo deserved to be handed a start by Brendan Rodgers but didn’t give his usual straight-shooting type of answer. His usual sparring partner Boyd accused him of sitting on the fence as he couldn’t make up his mind on whether to give the Portugal U-21 international a start over Arne Engels.
Celtic’s record summer signing has come in for some criticism recently, with Brendan Rodgers defending his start to life at the club during his Friday afternoon media duties. However, Boyd was his usual certain self, nodding along to the question saying he does indeed deserve to be handed a start by Rodgers.

Speaking on The Warm-Up, Sutton said: “Well, I know that's the debate doing the rounds [Bernardo or Engels]. I think Brendan Rodgers watches the players train every day and he would be best served, you know, to choose his starting line-up.
“By the way, it's the first time he's ever sat on the fence with anything,” Boyd interjected before Sutton did have to humorously admit “Hang on, I've got some splinters in my backside!”
“I get the debate," Sutton continued. "But I do think that there's an element where Arne Engels has come in for a lot of money. Celtic, in terms of their transfer policy, Celtic are a development club, they bring in development players, but £11 million in this day and age isn't a lot of money. You see the money banded around down south for players. So he's a development player.
“So they brought him in, and I think Brendan Rodgers, his strong suit, and people recognise his strong suit, at making players better. So I think there needs to be an element of patience. He's 21, just 21, so I do think because of the money which has been spent for him, people are thinking, well he should be the finished article and that isn't the case. So I think there needs to be a great deal of patience with him.
“At this moment in time, I think in the games coming up, and this might be a bit of a sit-on-the-fence answer, I think we will see a fair bit of rotation and Celtic will have to show their squad strength."
"So you’re saying Engels is playing because of the transfer fee?” poked Boyd, “I... No, I'm not saying that. That's ridiculous. I'm not saying that,” Sutton replied.
Boyd reckons it’s time for Bernardo to get in the squad from the start: “Right now, I think Bernardo deserves an opportunity. I think any time he comes on you could see, even last night [against Club Brugge], I thought he was excellent when he came on.”
