St Helens Head Coach Kristian Woolf has confirmed Jonny Lomax has ruptured his bicep following their Challenge Cup defeat against Wigan.

Lomax picked up the injury during last week’s win over Salford at the Totally Wicked Stadium. Woolf confirmed after that match that he would be sent for a scan.

He was named in the squad, and then played the full 80 minutes. He even scored a try as Saints came from 14-0 down to lead in the second half.

However, Woolf said he was not done for the season, and would continue to manage the injury.

He told his post-match press conference: “I’m extremely proud of Jonny- he was extremely brave.

“I said before the game that he has been extremely diligent, he’s worked extremely hard. Not too many players I think could cop the injury he has and put themselves in a position to play a week later.

“He was probably a bit hard on himself after the game. But he did a tremendous job to put himself in the picture to play.

“I certainly know we are a better team with him in the team, playing today. I thought he did a really good job overall.

“He’s ruptured his bicep. So there is no more damage he can do there. The rest of his arm and shoulder are as strong as can be.

“It’s something he will have to deal with in different ways. But he’s going to be able to get through the season, no dramas.”

Lomax another injury concern in the halves

The news on Lomax’s injury is one St Helens will certainly have to keep their eyes on for the rest of the season. They will not want to lose another first choice half-back.

They already have Lewis Dodd out for the season with a significant Achilles injury. He came off during their Good Friday win over Wigan.

James Roby and Joey Lussick have both done shifts in the halves. Ben Davies came in today, and Jack Welsby has also played there if needed.

They are next in action on Friday, as they face Hull FC.
