Liverpool had the opportunity to bring in Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, but the forward reportedly decided against joining them.
Liverpool were first linked with Mbappe back in 2017, following his breakout season with Monaco in which he managed 26 goals. He admitted to speaking with Liverpool officials as the Reds are his mother’s ‘favourite club’.
Ultimately, though, he went on to sign for PSG. They took him to the French capital on loan, with the transfer being made permanent in summer 2018. According to BBC Sport, PSG paid €180million (£166m) for the Frenchman.
He has gone on to play 240 times for the club since then, registering an incredible 191 goals. In that time, PSG have won four Ligue 1 titles, three French cups, two French league cups and three French super cups.
But Mbappe has been tipped to leave PSG on several occasions. There were widespread reports he would be swapping PSG for Real Madrid last year after running down his contract.
The goalscorer shocked everyone, including Real, by signing a new deal at the Parc des Princes in May. Despite this, there are still rumours he could secure a transfer elsewhere.
In December, Spanish newspaper Sport claimed Mbappe is hoping to leave PSG at the end of the 2022-23 season. This is because he feels he has been let down on several of the promises made during his contract talks. Plus, he apparently thinks he can score more goals and is more likely to win the Champions League at another club.
Real continue to be the frontrunners to sign Mbappe, given their financial power and standing as one of the most illustrious sides in Europe. But a switch to Liverpool could occur if the Real deal falls through, with Mbappe admitting he spoke to Liverpool before agreeing his new PSG contract.
Kylian Mbappe offered chance to join Liverpool
The Athletic have provided an update on Mbappe’s situation, and it includes an interesting piece of information about Liverpool. It states that even after Mbappe’s PSG contract had been announced, a PSG consultant ‘opened the door’ for him to leave.
PSG did not want the World Cup winner to go to Real though, and instead told him any move would have to be to Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s side, meanwhile, were told they would have to stump up an eye-watering £352m to sign Mbappe.
While Klopp was offered Mbappe, there was little chance of this deal ever reaching completion. Mbappe ‘rejected’ the opportunity to join the Reds and opted to remain in France.
It is interesting to see that PSG were open to letting Mbappe go despite his new contract. Publicly, they state that he is the prized asset and will never be sold. But privately, they might actually be open to letting him go.
Mbappe would undoubtedly be a fantastic capture for Liverpool. At the 2022 World Cup, he showed he is about to succeed Lionel Messi as the world’s best player by scoring three goals in the final. Plus, Mbappe is the world’s most valuable player on transfermarkt, being rated at €180m (£158m).
Mbappe would walk straight into Liverpool’s team. And he would take them to the next level thanks to his goals, assists and overall threat. However, Liverpool fans should not get too excited about his potential arrival.
After all, it would take hundreds of millions of pounds to snare Mbappe. And Klopp simply does not have this amount of money to play with right now.
