Labour MP deletes 'fat old racists' tweet in response to Jacob Rees-Mogg comments about 'Rule, Britannia!' row
An expletive-laden tweet sent from a Labour MP’s account, sent after senior Conservatives waded in on the Last Night of the Proms row, has been deleted.
Following confirmation that Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory would be performed without lyrics amid perceived links to slavery and colonialism, Boris Johnson said it was time to stop the “general bout of self-recrimination and wetness”.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of the House of Commons, backed the prime minister’s response, but Labour’s Neil Coyle launched a furious response in a tweet late on Tuesday.
Containing phrases including “fat old racists”, “absolute s***bag” and “w******”, the tweet later appeared to have been deleted, though no explanation was offered as to what happened.
Yahoo News UK has contacted the constituency office of Coyle to ask why the tweet was deleted but a reply has not been received yet.
Rees-Mogg and Johnson’s offices were also contacted for a response to Coyle.
Labour MP Dawn Butler branded the prime minister as a racist during hustings in Manchester back in February.
Top politicians have defended the PM from accusations of racism previously, with home secretary Priti Patel branding rapper Dave’s description of Johnson as “racist”, made the same month as Butler’s, as “utter nonsense”.
“He’s (Johnson) not a racist at all and I just think those comments are highly inappropriate,” she said.
It was unclear whether Coyle was referring to the prime minister and Rees-Mogg or other people.
Brexiters have been derided as holding racist views but many supporters will say there are multiple reasons they back leaving the EU, and reject claims that it is an automatically racist endeavour.
