Lady Devils overwhelm Cook

Jan. 18—ADEL — Tift County basketball teams won a pair of varsity games away from home Tuesday, both in convincing fashion. The Lady Devils took all of the sting out of Cook's Lady Hornets, 86-15, with the Blue Devils establishing a lead in the 2nd quarter and never letting go for a 55-40 final.

Tift's girls hit mercy rule territory early in the 2nd quarter, free throws by Jimmya Cushion giving them a 32-2 advantage. It was a 47-6 game at intermission, 71-10 after three frames. During one stretch, Tift scored 28 consecutive points.

Cushion finished the night with 26 points, Jalaya Miller with 16 and Faith Hillmon at 13. All exited in the 3rd period. Hillmon scored 10 in the 3rd quarter alone. Jalaiah Rainey had her biggest game as a Lady Devils, scoring 11 points.

The Lady Devils were an amazing 25-of-28 at the free throw line. Miller went 12-of-12 and Cushion was 9-of-10.

The points are the most since the Lady Devils posted 88 on Turner County on Dec. 11, 2021. The 71-point margin of victory is the most in at least 15 years, according to scores input on MaxPreps and is likely the largest in team history, based on available records. Tift had a 90-point game against Dooly County in 1990.

Fred White was the high scorer in the Devils' ninth win of the season. White had a career-high 12..

Tift broke out of an 8-8 tie at the end of the 1st to lead 28-16 at intermission.

Free throws by Jaden Nelson put them ahead 10-8 at the start of the 2nd period and Cook never caught back up. Corey Howard dunked off an assist from Malachi Evans during an 8-1 run in the 2nd. A Te'Shawn Bryant triple ended the half.

Two threes by Cook pulled the Hornets to 28-22 early in the 3rd, but the Devils responded with nine straight points, six by White. Blocks by Kaden Lawson and White, the smallest man on the floor, denied the Hornets from getting back in the game.

Tift led by as much as 20 in the 4th quarter, J.J. Lamar free throws pushing the score to 49-29.

Beyond White's 12 points, Evans finished with 9 and Lamar at 8.

Both the Devils and Lady Devils return home Friday to face Houston County.
