Lady Panthers hold off late Stonewall charge

Mar. 21—LATTA — The Latta High School softball team built an early lead and then had to hold off Stonewall 11-9 in a matchup between the two local teams Tuesday at Swanson Field,

Coach Jeremy Bates' club improved to 2-1, while Stonewall left town at 2-8.

Latta is at Roff at 4:30 p.m. today, while the Lady Longhorns travel to Byng at 4:30 p.m. today.

Latta 11, Stonewall 9

Latta bolted to an 8-0 lead after scoring four runs in both the first and second innings. But Stonewall responded with five runs in the top of the third inning to climb back into the game.

The Lady Longhorns got within 11-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning and then tried to pull off the upset in the top of the seventh.

B Smith led off the inning with a walk for Stonewall and Lilly Wyche followed with an infield hit.

With one out, Sierra Lumbert delivered an RBI single that made it 11-8.

Stonewall scored another run when Kaylee Ross hit into a fielder's choice to get within 11-9. Maddie Davis followed with an infield hit to put runners and first and second but Latta finally got out of the jam to preserve the victory.

Both teams piled up 11 hits in the contest.

Jaycie Prine had a hot bat for the Lady Panthers. She finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Kymber Davis and Jayse Smith had two hits each.

Talise Parnell slugged a two-run homer for Latta and Savannah Senkel went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Rylee Jones also doubled and scored a run for the home team.

Wyche led Stonewall at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored as her team's leadoff hitter. Lumbert and Davis contributed two hits apiece for the Lady Longhorns. Kaylee Ross drove in a pair of runs for the visitors and Faith Ross scored twice.
