Lady Vikes upset No. 9 Valley

Feb. 2—MONTGOMERY — For the second year in a row, Barr-Reeve and Springs Valley battled in a sectional barn burner. However, this year it would be Barr-Reeve (12-12) that did the barn burning, as they defeated 21-5 No. 9 Valley, 35-30 in the Big Ship on Friday in the sectional semis.

The low-scoring contest featured just two three pointers overall and only two players in double figures.

Hannah Bledsoe led the Vikes with 10 points, while Willow Thompson, Ava Carter and Olivia Emmons had six each. Ella Knepp, Emma Knepp and Mariah Brunson all added key baskets as well. Maddie Carnes of Springs Valley led all scoring with 16.

"We had to depend on our defense and that's what we did tonight. We got a great game from Hannah, Willow and Ava, and contributions up and down the line up. We knew Carnes would get her points, but tried to make everyone else step up if they wanted to beat us," said B-R coach Lacey Higgins.

There was only one Springs Valley bucket in the first 4:00 of action, but Emmons connected from deep to take the lead for Barr-Reeve. The Lady Hawks would add to more baskets, but Emmons would answer again and keep the margin at just one at the end of the first quarter.

Knepp came off the bench to start the second and added the go-ahead bucket for the Vikes. Bledsoe also added a jumper to recapture the lead at 9-8 for the Lady Vikes. Bledsoe added a second basket and B-R went into the half with a lead, 11-8, as No. 4 Valley went 0-7 from the 3-point line and were limited to just one basket during the second quarter.

Valley's Carnes erased the lead with the first four points of the third quarter. However Ava Carter answered with a bucket off a steal. Thompson added a pair of Viking free throws, but fouls in the final seconds led to Lady Hawk free throws and an 18-15 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Brunson and Thompson tied the game at 18-all early in the fourth and eventually helped take a 19-18 lead. Bledsoe added a jumper to make it a 6-0 run before Valley got back on the board. Tori McCormick tied the game at 23-all with Springs Valley's first 3-ball of the game.

Bledsoe went 4-4 from the stripe to give B-R a 27-25 lead with 3:24 left in the game. Knepp and Carter added big rebounds at both ends of the floor, as B-R pushed the lead to 28-26 with under 2:00 to play. Although Valley tied it, Carter completed a 3-point play and Thompson added a pair of free throws to make it 33-28. Knepp helped ice it with a free throw to go up by six. Emmons added the final point of the game to complete the upset win at 35-30.

In the first game, No. 4 Orleans defeated Rivet, 47-33 to advances to the final. The Vikings and Bulldogs meet at 7 p.m. In the first game of the season, Orleans beat B-R, 36-20.
