Liverpool ‘tried’ to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer but a deal is ‘impossible’ to complete, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Last week, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted the club are looking to sign a new central midfielder.

Five midfielders Liverpool might consider buying before the transfer deadline

They will not buy for the sake of buying, however.

Numerous names have been linked with a move to Anfield since Klopp’s comments.

Out of those rumoured to be a Liverpool target, Leipzig’s Laimer appeared to be the most realistic option.

Bayern Munich are also believed to be interested in the Austrian, who is out of contract in less than 12 months.

According to Sky Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg, a Leipzig contract extension beyond 2023 is ‘very unlikely’.

It would be a very typical Bundesliga signing if Laimer joined Bayern on a free transfer, though Liverpool will try their luck next summer if the player doesn’t move before then.

Plettenberg claims Liverpool ‘tried’ to sign the 25-year-old in the last few days, but to no avail.

A deal to sign Laimer before Thursday’s transfer deadline is apparently ‘impossible’ for the Reds to complete

Replying to a follower on Twitter, Plettenberg said a deal is impossible because Leipzig are ‘refusing everything’, though there are ‘a lot of reasons’.

Another midfielder the Reds have been linked with is Brighton’s young Ecuadorian Moises Caicedo.

Unfortunately for the Merseyside club, the Seagulls have no desire to sell, and if they were to offload the player he would probably cost well above £50million.

Over the weekend, Brighton head coach Graham Potter said Caicedo’s boots alone are worth the reported £42m bid Liverpool were weighing up.

And the club’s chief executive, Paul Barber, has reiterated this, insisting Albion are under no pressure to sell.

“As Graham said, that’s only going to get his boots,” Barber told talkSPORT.

“Moises Caicedo has done well, but he’s still a really young player and you know better than anyone that with young players form can be inconsistent and we don’t want the kind of pressure on Moises that these kinds of headlines can create.

“That said, he’s a very level-headed young man and more than capable of dealing with it, in our opinion.

“He’s settled into the Premier League fantastically and potentially he’s got a World Cup to look forward to as well, so it’s a really good time for Moises and we’re delighted to have him.”
