Neymar to PSG, Coutinho to Barcelona, De Gea to Real Madrid - which LaLiga deals will go through?

Neymar to Paris Saint Germain

It’s already the most talked about transfer story of the summer and just when you think it’s over, another twist in the tale appears. At times you don’t know whether you’re watching football or an episode of a Game of Thrones. There have been random percentages thrown around as well as sources from both sides putting out conflicting information. It’s genuinely hard to keep up.

Last night saw Gerard Pique, the unofficial spokesman for FC Barcelona, post a photo alongside Neymar on social media with the caption: “He’s staying.” Now Pique isn’t one to shy away from controversy but nor is he naive. There’s no upside to making this up or playing it off as what he hopes will happen. The Spaniard believes Neymar is staying.

Fast forward to this morning and various outlets are reporting that Neymar himself is yet to make a decision. Sources close to the player and his entourage believe he’s still weighing up the offer from PSG. Barcelona say they won’t offer improved terms to Neymar. So if the plan was to score a big pay rise but ultimately stay it hasn’t worked out as intended. Or is this a case of Barcelona dangerously trying to call Neymar’s bluff?

Chances of it happening: Who bloody knows?

David De Gea to Real Madrid

The International Challenge Cup finally allowed David De Gea to grace the same pitch as long-term admirers Real Madrid. Spain’s number one produced a fine second half performance as Manchester United emerged victorious. This only after one of the poorest penalty shootouts I can remember.

Jose Mourinho revealed in the pre-match press conference that he, along with the club, were open to De Gea leaving this summer. The same man revealed that Real Madrid decided against making a bid. As such, De Gea won’t be leaving United in this window. Now this can be interpreted in many ways and it largely depends on which team you support.

Some have suggested United were willing to let De Gea go as part of the Alvaro Morata deal but nothing else. Others suggest the asking price was deliberately set too high to put off Madrid. Maybe it was Zidane who publicly backed Navas that won the right to choose his starting keeper next season. Either way the lack of movement might be to United’s long-term goal. De Gea expressed his desire to return home, United accepted that but then Madrid said no thanks. Will this have put off the Spanish stopper off a future move?

Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona

Earlier this week there were reports in the English press of a £72m bid from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho. Liverpool rejected the deal and promptly told everyone he isn’t for sale. Even Jurgen Klopp, who was quite clearly irritated by the question, said there are no plans to sell Coutinho. “If I say he is not for selling, he is not for selling.”

Over in Spain the story isn’t as popular. It hasn’t made any front pages of the newspapers in Catalunya. Some will suggest that there isn’t smoke without fire. Maybe so. And the fact Neymar is dominating headlines is a decent enough reason for their interest in Coutinho to fall further down the pecking order. However it suggests a move isn’t anywhere near happening either.

Is he a potential Neymar replacement? Or maybe he’s someone who would convince Neymar to stay? PSG have a strong Brazilian contingent and Barcelona have already brought in Nelson Semedo, a fellow Portuguese speaker. Paulinho is also a name which refuses to go away. Yet again, Brazilian. Maybe Neymar staying would actually be bad news for Liverpool.

Chances of it happening: 2/5

Joao Cancelo to Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs players have been talking to the media this week and several followed the lead of Mauricio Pochettino in the belief new signings aren’t necessarily the solution. Some have rightly pointed to the mess following the departure of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid as proof of this. Spurs spent the money available to them but so many new faces caused the team to implode early on.

There is, however, a need to replace Kyle Walker in the squad. The wonderfully named Kyle Walker-Peters is a top prospect but it might be too soon to expect him to cover the right back role alongside Kieran Trippier. The problem for Spurs, as well as every other Premier League side, is selling clubs know they have money to burn. No one is going to be cheap and less so to an English side.

Spurs under Levy aren’t often the biggest spenders but they are smart with their money. A new stadium alongside the state of the art training facilities show their model is working. That shouldn’t distract from the fact a first-team ready player should fill the gap left by Walker – and the sooner the better.

Joao Cancelo was in a meeting with his agents last night according to Plaza Deportiva. Valencia are happy to sell the Portuguese youngster for around €25m as this would allow them to strengthen their squad. So far no one has followed up their interest with a concrete offer. Juventus are keeping tabs on the player but he remains one of the options for Spurs also.

Chances of it happening: 2/5

Jesus Navas to Newcastle United

Sevilla’s son, Jesus Navas, remains a key target for his hometown club. The ‘Blue Steel’ perfectionist has been photographed regularly in Spain this summer. A move back to Sevilla seems inevitable. However the deal is at a sticking point when it comes to the financial side of things and this has given Newcastle United hope.

Rafa Benitez wants the Spanish winger to extend his stay in England and play a significant role in the Magpies upcoming season. Money isn’t an issue for them and at 31, it might be the last big contract of his career. Could another big pay day force Navas to put off his homecoming?

Well, maybe not. Sevilla are confident of sealing the deal this week. The player is desperate to return despite the current impasse over money. Navas is working with a personal trainer ahead of the new season and it looks increasingly likely he will be back in LaLiga.
