Frank Lampard has not played down the importance of the summer transfer window as Everton look to avoid another relegation battle in 2022/23.

The Toffees secured Premier League safety in their penultimate game of the season after a dramatic comeback victory at home to Crystal Palace.

Will Erik ten Hag ‘show some cojones and biff off’ Ronaldo after Manchester United slip into mid-table?

Lampard was appointed manager in January after Rafael Benitez’s short stint in charge.

He was able to make two signings in the winter window, bringing in Dele Alli from Tottenham on a permanent deal and Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek on loan.

The former Chelsea manager’s only summer signing so far is James Tarkowski, who was available on a free after his Burnley contract expired.

Following the big-money sale of Richarlison to Spurs last week, Lampard could be granted some extra cash to spend this summer.

Everton have been linked with Chelsea’s Armando Broja, Wolves’ Morgan Gibbs-White and Spurs’ Harry Winks in recent weeks.

Lampard has said that the club’s summer recruitment will be a “big challenge” and is hopeful the Merseysiders bring in the right players to avoid another relegation dog fight.

“Recruitment – and who goes out – is a huge part of any football club,” Lampard told the club’s official website.

“Particularly when you are a manager who comes in mid-season.

“The [January] transfer window shut one day after I joined, so you work with the players you have straight away.

“But when you look forward, you think about how you can strengthen in different areas, ‘How would this look?’. It is vital to get that right.

“It will be a big challenge for me and the Club… to make sure we go in the right direction, because it is clear we don’t want to be fighting relegation and recruitment will be a big part of that.”
