The Last of Us devs issue update on new gameSony/Naughty Dog

The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog has issued a new update on the upcoming PlayStation 5 multiplayer game after a long period of radio silence.

The title was originally set to be part of The Last of Us Part II, similar to how the first game had its 'Factions' mode, but was announced in 2019 to become its own game instead.

Four years on and with no official content beyond a piece of concept art released, Naughty Dog has announced that the game will continue to take longer than expected to create.

"We're incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we've realised what is best for the game is to give it more time," the statement reads.

"Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience. We look forward to sharing more soon.

"We're grateful to our fantastic community for your support – thank you for your passion for our games, it continues to drive us."

This statement was released shortly before an article from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier was published, which claims that Bungie (the Destiny developer who Sony Interactive Entertainment bought to manage its move into live-service gaming) recently did an internal evaluation and "raised questions about the The Last of Us multiplayer project's ability to keep players engaged for a long period of time."

While the news might be disappointing for fans, Bungie has proven itself in the live-service space, and the confirmation that Naughty Dog is working on a new single-player game is exciting.
