Laurence Fox has said he has been "falsely smeared" after calling on shoppers to boycott Sainsbury’s for its support of Black History Month.

The supermarket said it was “proud” to celebrate the annual event, which began on October 1 and recognises black history and culture, and stressed it would “not tolerate racism”.

“We proudly represent and serve our diverse society and anyone who does not want to shop with an inclusive retailer is welcome to shop elsewhere,” Sainsbury’s tweeted.

It prompted the controversial actor to announce he was boycotting the firm, accusing it of “promoting racial segregation and discrimination”.

Mr Fox wrote: “Dear @sainsburys. I won’t be shopping in your supermarket ever again whilst you promote racial segregation and discrimination.

“I sincerely hope others join me. RT. #BoycottSainsburys.“

It sparked a furious backlash with many mocking Mr Fox’s stance.

One user jibed at Mr Fox: "Triggered by a shop", while the comedian James Felton said: "They specifically asked racists not to shop there. You can’t own them by following their exact instructions."

During an angry exchange on Sunday, Mr Fox responded to his critics, calling them “blue ticker leftists”.

In a fresh statement on Twitter on Monday, Mr Fox said he had been "repeatedly smeared as a racist".

He wrote: “If the game nowadays is to throw baseless insults and accusations about, then we should all be free to participate.

“Having said that, I have deleted the tweets posted yesterday, in response to being repeatedly, continuously and falsely smeared as racist, as they just serve a distraction to the important work that needs to be done.”

The row comes as Mr Fox, who rose to fame after denouncing “woke” culture in a BBC Question Time appearance in January, launches a new political party to fight the so-called culture wars, reignited in recent months during the Black Lives Matter protests.

Named Reclaim, the party vowed to demand a “reclamation of our values” and was due to submit papers to the electoral register last week.

"The people of the United Kingdom are tired of being told that we represent the very thing we have, in history, stood together against,” Mr Fox said of the new movement.

"We are all privileged to be the custodians of our shared heritage. We can reclaim a respectful nation where all are included and none are ashamed to have somewhere to call home.”

Mr Fox told Talk Radio on Monday that he “intends to be elected”.
