John Robertson has backed Lawrence Shankland to bounce back from his Euro 2024 disappointment by shattering more records at Hearts.

The Scotland striker was overlooked for Che Adams at this summer's showpiece tournament in Germany and was limited to just 23 minutes of action. That's despite a spectacular season at Tynecastle where he plundered an incredible 31 goals across all competitions, scooping just about every Player of the Year gong on offer.

And Jambos legend Robertson has urged Shankland - who is out of contract next summer - to use his international agony as motivation to inspire Hearts to another memorable year.

He said: "Shankland went to the Euros in Germany on the back of two phenomenal seasons, not just one as some people were suggesting. I have no doubt he'd have been hoping for more minutes than he eventually got. But Steve Clarke has a very specific style of play, and he picked Adams to start every game. Ultimately he has to make those big calls as Scotland boss.

"Actually, it could work out in Hearts favour. Shanks will want to come back and prove himself once again. There are records there to be broken at Tynecastle, and I hope that he goes on to get them. Shanks has got three more caps to his name, and I believe he will use the experience as motivation to kick on and score even more this season.

"There were times in the past when I was overlooked for the Scotland team, even when I was scoring a lot of goals. I didn't get my first cap until I was 26. So I used that as motivation to go and try to prove people wrong. I have no doubt Shanks will come back and show everyone how good he is by having another phenomenal season. And that can only benefit Hearts."
