William Grigg celebrates scoring for MK Dons against Manchester United (PA)

MK Dons humiliated Manchester United with a comfortable, deserved 4-0 victory in the second round of the Capital One Cup at Stadium MK.

Jonny Evans made a terrible start to the match by gifting a pass straight to Ben Reeves in the box on 24 minutes. The Northern Irish midfielder squared the ball for Will Grigg to finish. This is only Louis van Gaal's third competitive match in charge of Manchester United, and already he must be wondering whether Angel Di Maria is any good at centre-back.

In fact, Di Maria would have been better than any United player on the pitch with only Nick Powell anywhere close to impressing. If United do not get Daley Blind or Arturo Vidal any time soon, Powell might find himself starting in midfield at the weekend.

MK Dons will be proud of their performance, but the truth is they needed merely to be competent to outperform United. Brentford loanee Stuart Grigg was brilliant for the hosts, scoring the first two goals, the second a brilliant finish with his head. Benik Afobe added two more to create an apocalyptically bad start for Van Gaal, and to claim a famous victory for the League One side.

4' - POWELL SHOT - Reece James squares the ball for the oncoming Nick Powell, who curls a left-footed shot just over the bar from the edge of the box.

25' - GRIGG SCORES - Evans passes witlessly straight to Reeves in the box, De Gea rushes across to cover, allowing Reeves to pull the ball back for Grigg to strike into an empty net.

34' - ANOTHER POWELL SHOT - Hernandez shifts the ball inside for Powell, who sends a shot just over with the outside of his right foot.

50' - PENALTY APPEAL - Bowditch curls a shot to the corner of the goal, striking Evans on the arm, but the referee gives nothing.

59' - WELBECK SHOT - Welbeck creates a yard of space on the edge of the box and slams a shot just wide of goal.

63' - GRIGG SCORES - A loose pass from United, Grigg sends Reeves free down the left and chests the return pass brilliantly past De Gea.

69' - AFOBE SCORES - Another loose pass from United, Reeves slides the ball forward for Afobe to split the defence and he strokes the ball past De Gea.

73' - WILSON STRIKE - Martin does brilliantly to tip a long-range shot over the bar.

81' - JANUZAJ SHOT - Januzaj thunders a shot against the post with an angled effort.

84' - AFOBE SCORES - Vermijl misjudges all long ball forward, Afobe collects, drives towards goal, skips through three challenges and fires into the corner.

4 - Manchester United have been eliminated by lower league opposition in four of the last eight League Cups.

4 - This is the first time Manchester United have conceded four goals in a League Cup match against lower league opposition.

2 - Will Grigg has scored his first brace in all competitions since August 2013.

1995 - The last time Manchester United played in the League Cup second round was October 1995 (losing 4-3 on agg to York City).

60 million - Angel Di Maria cost £60 million pounds and will be wondering what he's doing at Manchester United.

29,000 - The match was a rare sellout for MK Dons.

10 - MK Dons are just 10 years old.

Louis van Gaal is famous for promoting youth at his sides, but is there any to promote? Even Adnan Januzaj, of which so much is expected, joined the rest of his side in being cowardly and incompetent. The rot of mediocrity set in with Alex Ferguson's last couple of years, flourished under Moyes, and has yet to be properly tackled by Van Gaal.

Will Grigg (MK Dons): Every one of MK Dons' players can be thoroughly proud of their performance tonight, not just because of patronising concepts like passion and commitment, but because of their relentless skewering of a hubris-scented United. Grigg, however, deserves special credit for his superb second goal.
