Andy Robinson scored in the 56th minute to grab the game’s only goal, with Tranmere moving further clear of second-placed Sheffield United.

The Blades recovered from two goals down to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw with 10-man Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium after Billy Paynter was sent off.

Doncaster, who are level on points with United in third place, went 2-0 up through Paynter and Dave Syers, before Nick Blackman and Dave Kitson scored in the final 11 minutes to level the match.

Brentford were held to a goalless draw against Bournemouth at Griffin Park, but it was a very different story at the County Ground as substitute James Collins scored four and Danny Hollands one as Swindon thrashed Portsmouth 5-0.

MK Dons beat Notts County 2-1 at Meadow Lane with Darren Potter and Daniel Powell on target to render Jamal Campbell-Ryce’s penalty irrelevant.

Crawley Town beat Colchester 3-0 with Mark Connolly, Billy Clarke and Nicky Adams all getting on the scoresheet, while Yeovil climbed up to ninth with a 3-0 win over Leyton Orient courtesy of a brace from Paddy Madden and a goal from James Hayter.

Crewe beat Carlisle 1-0 thanks to Lauri Dalla Valle’s goal, but Coventry dropped to 11th after Marvin Morgan’s effort gave Shrewsbury a 1-0 win at the Ricoh Arena.

Stevenage dropped to 12th after losing 1-0 to Walsall, and Preston beat Hartlepool at Victoria Park by the same score with John Mousinho providing the goal, while Scunthorpe and Oldham shared a 2-2 draw at Glanford Park.
